Based in Tampa, Florida, the Tampa Ray Lighting play in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. The franchise was founded in 1992. In their first season of play, the Lightning recorded 50 plus win at 53 points. It was considered to be one of the best performances ever by an NHL expansion team.
The Tampa Bay Lighting posted their first ever winning season during 1995-96. They posted a win – loss record of 38 – 32. For the first time the Lighting reached the Conference quarterfinals only to lose to the Flyers but the Tampa Bay Lightings could not sustain this performance and recorded losing seasons till 2002. The Tampa Bay Lighting made this futile record of being the first NHL team to post four consecutive 50- loss seasons.
Since 1996, the Tampa Bay posted their first winning season in 2002-03 and managed to reach up to the Conference Semifinals but eventually lost to the Devils. The following season, the Lighting winded up the season in first rank in Eastern Conference and reached the playoffs. The Lighting defeated the New York Islanders in first round of the playoffs to meet the Canadiens in the semifinals. The Tampa Bay Lighting swept away the Canadiens and then the Flyers to reach their first ever Stanley Cup finals. The Lighting were unstoppable as they defeated the Flames to clinch their first ever Stanley Cup title.
