Based in Tampa, Florida, the Tampa Ray Lighting play in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. The franchise was founded in 1992. In their first season of play, the Lightning recorded 50 plus win at 53 points. It was considered to be one of the best performances ever by an NHL expansion team.

The Tampa Bay Lighting posted their first ever winning season during 1995-96. They posted a win – loss record of 38 – 32. For the first time the Lighting reached the Conference quarterfinals only to lose to the Flyers but the Tampa Bay Lightings could not sustain this performance and recorded losing seasons till 2002.
