Based in San Jose, California, San Jose Sharks play in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. The franchise was established in 1991 and since then it is based in San Jose only.

The San Jose were disappointing in their first few seasons of play, they could not even manage a winning season until 2000. Year 2000, the Sharks posted score of 35- 30, their first ever season win.

The San Jose Sharks qualified for their first postseason appearance in 1993-94, but lost to the Maple Leafs in the Conference semifinals. The following season, the Sharks again advanced to the playoffs and this time again they lost the semifinals and this time against the Red Wings.

The Sharks missed the playoffs for the next two seasons and made two consecutive playoff appearances in 1997 and 1998 but on both the occasions they made an early exit after losing in the first round.

2001, the Sharks won their first ever Pacific Division title, swept away the Phoenix in the first round of the playoffs but then lost to the Avalanche in the second round.

The Sharks won their nest Division championship in 2003-04 and for the first time in the franchise history the team crossed the 100 points mark and then went on to defeat the Blues and then the Avalanche to reach the Conference finals for the first time but eventually lost to the Flames.
