In 1970 Portland Trail Blazers joined the NBA as an expansion team. Blazers defeated Cleveland in their first match, 115- 112. Petrie was awarded as NBA Rookie of the Year in 1972 he averaged 24.5 points per game. In 1972-73 Jack McCloskey took over as head coach.

Season 1976-77, The Blazers defeated Los Angeles Lakers and went on winning the Western Conference Finals and their way to the finals. The 1976 -77 final was between Portland Trail Blazers and Philadelphia 76ers and Blazers won the NBA championship. Season 78-79 the champions posted 58 – 24 score, the best in NBA. Walton was voted as NBA Most Valuable Player.

In 1986-87 Mike Schuler took over as head coach and the success came instantly to him as he was named NBA Coach of the Year.

1990-91, Trail Blazers posted a franchise-record of 63 victories. Season 1991-92, Blazers posted 57 victories and again lead the Western Conference for the second straight year. Portland then reached to the NBA Finals against the Chicago Bulls and the contest was won by the Bulls.

In 1994-95, Clyde Drexler and Tracy Murray were traded to the Houston Rockets for Otis Thorpe. The Trail Blazers finished the season at 44-38 record and Lost to the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the playoffs.

In the 1997-98 Portland Trail Blazers, won 46 games and finished fourth in the Pacific Division.1998-99, the Trail Blazers reached 35-15 record and lost to San Antonio in the Western finals.

In 2000-01 Portland recorded 42-18, the best in the Western Conference and second in the NBA after Philadelphia. In 2003-2004, Trail Blazers regained their path to victory and won 12 of their next 17 games and Zach Randolph was named as  the NBA’s Most Improved Player of 2003-2004.
Trail Blazers had the busiest 2006 NBA draft, Traded Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff, and the Blazers 2nd round pick in 2008 to the Boston Celtics for Raef LaFrentz, Dan Dickau, and the rights to the #7 pick and Traded Foye for the rights to the #6 pick, Brandon Roy from University of Washington.
