The Penguins made it to the Stanley Cup quarterfinals in 1975 but could not reach the semifinals as they were defeated by the New York Islanders. During the period of second half of the 1970’s decade till the later half of the 80’s decade the Penguins could not even mange a winning season. In 1984, they finished last in the league and won the first overall pick in NHL Entry Draft, the Penguins picked Mario Lemieux who went on becoming a superstar in NHL history.
After few rough seasons the Penguins finally reached at the top in the 1990-91 season. The Pittsburgh Penguins reached the Stanley Cup Finals and beat the Minnesota North Stars to claim the Stanley Cup. The following season under the leadership of the Scotty Bowman as the new team coach, the Penguins won their second consecutive Stanley Cup and this time their opponents in the finals were the Chicago Blackhawks.
Since then the Penguins have not claimed any NHL title but this time they would like to repeat the lost glory.
