Memphis Grizzlies then known as , The Vancouver Grizzlies became NBA franchises in 1995. In 1996 NBA draft , the Grizzlies used their  3rd overall pick to select Shareef Abdur-Rahim but the Grizzlies continued to struggle.

Season 1997, the Grizzlies picked  Antonio Daniels  And showed signs of  improvement finishing in 6th place.Team continued to tuggle the following seasons and thenthe team moved to Memphis, in 2001.

NBA season 2001-02, the Grizzlies selected  Jerry West as general manager and he was later awarded as the NBA Executive of the year Award, 2003-04. In the 2001 NBA Draft, Pau Gasol was traded to the Grizzlies and he went on winning  the Rookie of the Year Award. 2002-03 season, Hubie Brown replaced as the coach and the following season he won the NBA Coach of the Year Award and also  the Grizzlies reached  the NBA playoffs for the first time in franchise  history.
