In the season 1976-77, Indiana pacers joined the NBA. Initially, Indiana Pacers began playing in the ABA and claimed the ABA championship thrice but struggled from the beginning in the NBA and finished their first NBA season with record of 36-46. Larry Bird was appointed as the head coach. Indiana posted their best record in franchise history at 58-24; the team reached the NBA Finals for the first time but then lost to the Bulls.

For the fourth time in six years Pacers reached the Eastern Conference finals in the 1998-99 season. Reggie Miller was Indiana's top scorer. 1999-00 The Pacers won their first Eastern Conference championship and reached  to the NBA Finals for the first time ever, but lost  to the powerful Los Angeles Lakers .

Seven-player trade with the Chicago Bulls in the season 2001-02. Season 2002-03, the Pacers posted the best record 61-21.
