Based in Edmonton, Canada, the Edmonton Oilers play in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. The franchise was founded in 1972 and was known as the Alberta Oilers for one year and then was named as Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers joined the NHL from1979-80 season. The success came early for the Edmonton Oilers as they reached the playoffs in their first season with the league. The Oilers reached the playoffs for thirteen consecutive seasons and thus were very popular with the fans.
Season 1983-84, the Oilers finished the season with franchise record of 57 wins and won their second Conference title against the North Stars and advanced to the Stanley Cup finals. In the finals, the Oilers defeated the Islanders to win the much deserved and their first ever Stanley Cup. The Following season, the Edmonton Oilers successfully defended their Stanley Cup title. After missing the Stanley Cup finals for one year in 1986, the Oilers won two consecutive Stanley Cup championships. NHL season 1989-90, the Oilers recreated their magic and defeated the Bruins to win their fifth Stanley Cup title. It was their latest championship so far. Post 1991-92 season the Oilers magic began to fade and in 1993 the team missed the playoffs for the first time. The Oilers could not return to the playoffs for next four years.
2005-06, the Oilers revived and bounced back into the game. They won the Conference title against the Mighty Ducks and advanced to the Stanley Cup finals, it was their first finals visit since 1990 but this time the Oilers lost the Stanley Cup to the Hurricanes.
