In 1967, Denver nuggets entered ABA and at that time they were known as The Denver Rockets. Then, in the same year, a franchise named the San Diego Rockets began play. So after seven seasons of their existence, Denver team officials renamed the club as “Nuggets" referring to mining boom in Colorado. Here, people used to rush to the area, with an expectation to make their fortunes by panning gold and silver nuggets.
With the inclusion of David Thompson,Marvin Webster, Dan Issel and Bobby Jones and with coaching of Larry Brown, they had their best seasons in the franchise history as the team made to the ABA finals in 1975-76.
The Nuggets continued to be strong in the NBA, as they went on winning division titles in their first two but were not ultimately successful in the postseason.Brown stepped down as coach in 1979 and a decline in the team performance was witnessed.In 1981 Doug Moe was signed as the coach and and during the 1981-82 season, they scored at least 100 points in every game.
In 1984-85, Nuggets reached the Western Conference finals but lost in five games to the Los Angeles Lakers. Paul Westhead replaced as coach in 1990.
