Mavericks joined the NBA league in 1980-81 season. During the 1982-83 season the Mavericks marked the third-best improvement in the NBA when they were 10 games better than the previous year and finished the season at 38-44.

In 1983-84, the Dallas Mavericks finished 43-39 and were placed second in the Midwest Division and made their first playoff appearance and ended the season with fourth playoff spot in the Western Conference. In 1984 the Dallas Mavericks made their second consecutive playoff appearance. In 1985 draft the Dallas picked Detlef Schrempf from the Cleveland and finished season at 44-38 record.

In 1988, the Mavericks made their first ever appearance to the Western Conference Finals but lost to the Lakers and could not make it to the NBA finals. Year 1989-90, the Dallas reached the playoffs with a 47-35 record.

1992-93 season, In first-round NBA draft pick the Dallas departed Rolando Blackman to the New York Knicks .In the 1994 NBA Draft, the Dallas selected Jason Kidd and that bring back some hope to the team and the fans. During1996-97 a complete makeover was given to the team as 27 different players were included. season 2000-2001, the Mavericks finished with an impressive record of 53-29 showing signs of improvement. 2001-2002 was best in franchise history when they finished the season at 57-25 record
