Based in Calgary, Alberta, the Calgary Flames play in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. The franchise was founded in 1972 and started playing in Calgary in 1980. The Flames performed well in their early years of play and impressed the fans by posting winning record of 39 – 27, in their first season. This was not the only success; the Calgary Flames reached the playoffs for six times in eight seasons but were not able to translate the success to the playoffs.
1989, was remarkable for the Flames, the finished the regular season with 50 plus record for the first time and managed to reserve a berth for themselves in the playoffs. The Flames defeated the Blackhawks to clinch their first ever Conference title and made way to the Stanley Cup finals. The Flames were unstoppable as they defeated the Canadiens to lift their first ever Stanley Cup.
After 1992 playoff appearance, the Flames made to playoffs three years in a row and that also included two consecutive division titles. On all the three occasion the Flames could not reach the second round of the playoffs and made an early exit. The Flames missed the playoffs for next seven years and reached the playoffs in 2004 and went on winning the Conference finals against the Sharks but lost in the Stanley Cup finals against the Sharks.
